Visit to the vet
1.06.2011
Pets' health certificates are done! We visited our new vet today.
Although perfectly healthy in other respects, Eddie unfortunately was found to be a "little overweight". He weighs 26 lbs - he used to be 22. I'm thinking it has to do with my husband, who likes to feed him a nicely rounded scoop of food in the morning, as opposed to the flat scoop that I usually give him. Or it could be the fact that his favorite spot in the house the last couple of months has been curled up in front of the fireplace:
I've made him a nice, comfy pillow to lay on since I've taken this picture. He's curled up on it as I type this, in fact!
Ozzy, while being a large 15 lbs, is not overweight. And more shocking, did not bite the vet during the exam! I was absolutely amazed - it's almost a given with strangers poking and prodding him. The vet was so gentle, his voice was so soothing, that he was able to take his temperature (not fun for cats, by the way), massage his belly, check his teeth and even clean his ears out!
That guy is a pro. We're definitely going back to him again.
After learning my poor doggy is slightly overweight (pile on the guilt, why don't ya), I loaded the bike up in the back of the truck and Eddie and I went to the park. I have a great little attachment that allows me to keep both hands on the handlebars while he runs beside the bike.
This is what it looks like:
Nifty, huh?
We had a large dog lunge at us during the ride...which of course made Eddie lunge back. My bike stayed perfectly steady the whole time. Much easier than holding the leash out to the side.
We'll have to do this more often. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! We have a 60% chance of snow tomorrow...

Awww... Eddie overweight??? He sure doesn't look like it. He wears his weight well :) It's so funny to hear that a 15 lb. cat is not overweight. I always try to explain to people how big boned he is... and how tiny my own (currently overweight) cat is in comparison.
I think I'm going to have to get one of those attachments for my bike. I was wondering how it would react with the dog lunging... but it sounds like it can handle the jerking just fine.
Oh yeah, I wouldn't have even known Eddie had jerked on the thing if I hadn't looked back. There's no way your little guy could yank your bike around - he's a lot lighter than Eddie!
I think it's just his body type. He rarely fills out in the toothpick like legs, while most of the fat just goes to his sausage like body. I'm sure he'll run it off in no time. As for Ozzy, I fondly remember the time when I took them to the vet, and after warning them that he can be a little.."bitey".. the guy goes into the back, grabs these insanely industrial sized rubber gloves that go all the way up to his armpits and look insanely thick and says, "Joe, we got a biter here!"
Too funny Rach, I almost asked them if they had gloves available. I thought for sure they'd need them :).
I still remember taking Ozzie to the vet for his checkup before his flight to Korea. When I finally got him into the kennel and picked it up, the back end hung down. I thought it was broken! Turns out Ozzie had gained a few pounds from the morning cream ritual (it kept him from attacking me in the mornings!) Then, Frank took Ozzie to Dallas for me to put him on his flight. He let Ozzie out of his kennel in the hotel room and Ozzie attacked him! Yet, Frank still talked the airlines into NOT putting him in baggage where he would have frozen to death! So, Ozzie rode first class all the way to Seoul! I wonder which life he is on now?
