Nursery preparation
1.14.2011
Yesterday morning, I dragged a couple of items out of storage.
Exhibit 1. Chris' cradle from babyhood.
Custom-made in California before his parents moved to Turkey, it has the carpenter's initials and the date carved into the bottom - 10/20/1978. About 7 months before little Christian was born.
After my father-in-law George died in 2007, we found this hanging in the garage at the house in Roswell. It's been in storage in the room under our deck for the last three and a half years - it had quite a layer of dust/filth on it! All it needed was a little bit of cleaning and a bit of oil, and it looks pretty lovely (I took this picture before it got the oil treatment).
It might not be the most practical piece of furniture for a baby, but I'm sure we'll still get some use out of it. I don't think it will be baby's primary bed, as it is pretty low to the ground and I can predict quite a few backaches from reaching down and picking up and putting down the baby over and over again. Maybe it'll be a good spot for naps downstairs while Mama is trying to get something down around the house :). The rocking action works better on wood floors anyway (our bedroom is carpeted).
Exhibit 2. Changing table
We picked this up a couple years ago when my boss at the time was throwing it out. We borrowed his truck and he asked us to just take this to the dump, so instead we stuck it in the garage. It has a few nicks here and there and needs a new changing pad and cover, but it's in pretty good condition.
It fits perfectly! And it didn't take long for Ozzy to start sniffing around....
He spent a few minutes smelling it and rubbing his face and body against it, but luckily didn't try to jump up onto it. (Wow, he looks giant from this angle!) I'm hoping he'll leave the baby stuff alone - I really don't want cat hair on everything. The nursery door will be closed most of the time anyway, so at least he won't be in there making himself comfortable when I'm not around.A shot of the other side of the nursery:
The cute (handmade!) pillows on the futon were given to me by Katie's friend Gloria. They just happened to be perfect for this room. And the (rather messy at the moment) closet:
This walk-in closet has it's own window! Right now it's my sewing space, but once that stuff is moved out, it has room for hanging clothes on the back wall and even a dresser or some kind of cube shelf storage to the left.I have a couple vintage children's books that I bought for the sole purpose of framing and hanging in a nursery one day. They're somewhere in the basement...hmm...I'll have to go hunting for those this weekend.
That's about it for the nursery planning so far! We aren't doing much more than you see here, because we're not sure how long we'll be in this house. We can't rent it before we bring the baby home, and it might be a couple months after he/she is home before we can manage to get it on the rental market, so it's still kind of up in the air right now. Luckily, there isn't really much left to do to the room to make it "baby ready".
Goals for this weekend:
-Finish the "net worth" paperwork for our home study
-Buy smoke detectors for each bedroom and a carbon monoxide detector for the house (currently, we only have a smoke detector at the top of each stairwell), so we can pass our fire inspection next week.
-Make copies of our whole home study packet to get it ready for submission (hopefully by the end of next week).

I can't wait to see the nursery finished! I bought something for the baby while shopping with Emily yesterday. I added it to the basket of things I've been acquiring for you and your little one. Love you bunches!
Awww... I like the little cradle :) I think that would be perfect downstairs for napping. That's a very nice changing table too... especially since it was free :) And if you wanted a different look- you could paint it and add some cute fabric to hide the shelves underneath.
