Landscaping woes
12.17.2008
I know, December is a strange time to be thinking about landscaping.
Just this past weekend though, I was wrestling with the kajillion tons of leaves around the front and back yard. I learned a new technique for hauling leaves - throwing them on a giant tarp and pulling that up the hill to the hole to be tossed in. I used to pile them in the wheelbarrow and wheel that up the hill, dump, and repeat 10 or 20 times. It only took 3 tarp loads for the whole front of the house (the area around the deck and garage at least).
The back yard is a bit harder because there are so many steps and different levels to the yard. I got started on raking, but didn't get to the haulin' before dark. As I raked though, I realized what bad shape the landscaping is in. We have some serious erosion issues, need to put in some french drains down in the "sandpit" where we're trying to grow grass, and put in grass, ground cover and other plants in the rest of the yard. Also, the fence needs some serious work. It's sort of leaning...
All this is outside of my realm of expertise. Between the two of us, Chris and I could read up and learn, and figure out the majority of it. But I'm thinking we might have to break down and consult a landscape designer.
I think another reason I always think of planting and yardwork in the winter is that the trees are bare and I can see every single area of our property that needs work. Maybe we should invest in some more evergreens!
Or maybe it's because I'm already ready for spring?
