Rachel's Language House Dinner
10.21.2008
Last night, we went to the Around the World Dinner at Rachel's Language House. Each cluster had their own table where they served food from their target language's country, and displayed items from that culture. They had a little competition for taste and presentation. Rachel's Russian cluster served a Russian Vinagret Salad, some Blini with meat and cabbage, and some little chocolate drop thingies. The salad's main ingredients of course were beets and potatoes :). It was pretty good and a little tangy. I tried the cabbage blini, which they had a hard time keeping warm, and it was good as well. I love cabbage! Those little chocolate drops, although they looked like poop, were heavenly! They were slightly melted, so I just ate it with a fork. Yum... I went back for seconds later. Chris and I wandered around from table to table and tried 99% of the dishes. My favorites were the French table - they did food from a couple of the French-speaking African nations. One was a shredded chicken with plantains and peppers and onions, which was fantastic. The Hebrew females did a date cake which was probably my favorite dessert (besides the chocolate drops of course!). After we stuffed our faces, we got to watch the videos that each cluster had prepared. Some were cute, and others were just plain boring. The Hebrew cluster filmed the owner of some Pita shop talking about her franchise! Ugh, it was horrible. The best one? Rachel's Russian cluster video! It was without a doubt one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. Apparently, Rachel wrote the screenplay and her roommate did the editing. It was just brilliant. She is planning on posting it on her blog soon, and when she does I'll post a link to it. My favorite part of the video? When they opened the fridge for breakfast and all you saw was potatoes, cabbage and vodka! Ahh, I actually had tears running down my face I was laughing so hard. Good job Rach!
