Happy New Year!
1.12.2009
Okay, It's been almost a month since I've written anything. We had a fantastic visit home to Lafayette! We did have a pretty tiring day of flying - every flight that day was delayed for a total of 6 extra hours spent in the airport. But besides that, what a great Christmas and New Year's! We definitely needed the time off, and managed to stay pretty relaxed and feel rested most of the two weeks. Of course, with younger siblings around and plenty of things to do we didn't get as much sleep as I'm used to (yep, my old self needs at least 8 hours nowadays). We had a lot of fun though. We relaxed around the house with both Moms, spent a lot of time with my sis Em and her boyfriend Andy, and cooked up some great meals. Well, Chris ended up cooking almost every night! He was fantastic - he cooked a fantastic borscht the second night we were there, the lamb and stuffing (and some other stuff as well) for Christmas, stuffed zucchini one night, and several other things as well. We were well-fed, that's for sure! He's a natural talent in the kitchen, luckily for us.
Speaking of food, we always visit Cafe Des Amis when we're home over a Saturday. They do a zydeco breakfast that is just amazing. The bands are always good, the food is always delicious. It's just plain good fun. We discover a new favorite on this trip - Dupuy's in Abbeville. Talk about good oysters!!! I love raw oysters, and have had all kinds, but nothing beats fresh, Louisiana oysters. The price is right too! Probably a third of what we'd pay in the Baltimore area. Rachel's friend who was in town for a couple days was amazed by the piles of oyster shells in the parking lot at the restaurant :). We all had a good laugh about that - so many parking lots in Lafayette area are oyster shell that you don't notice these things anymore. Anyway, we'll definitely be heading back to Dupuy's next time we're back in town.
My favorite part of being home of course is having everyone in the same place at once. Christmas Day was really the only full day that happened, since Katie, Kyle and David were in town such a short time and had to spend time with Kyle's family as well. They had driven in late Christmas Eve, so slept late on Christmas morning. I think we were all up and waiting - sure that David would be popping his head in the door any minute! I think it was 9:30 before everyone was up and ready for breakfast (Rachel and I had make egg pancakes the night before). We let David hand out all the presents - he's remarkably patient for a 5 year old! We had all gotten together to give him the Prince Caspian castle from the Chronicles of Narnia. He had told Mimi about it months ago oh so subtley. He opened it, and started squealing Thank you! He was adorable. I took a video of the whole thing, which I'll upload to Youtube as soon as I can, and post the link here. Here's a couple pics from Christmas:
